Rebar (Sariya) Weight Chart — kg per Metre, per Foot and per 40 ft Bar
Updated 4 min readBy OR Steels
Short answer
A steel reinforcing bar weighs d² ÷ 162.2 kg per metre, where d is the bar diameter in millimetres. A 12 mm bar weighs about 0.888 kg/m (10.8 kg per 40 ft bar) and a 16 mm bar about 1.578 kg/m (19.2 kg per 40 ft bar).
Rebar weight chart (10 mm to 40 mm)
| Bar size | kg per metre | kg per foot | kg per 40 ft bar | Bars per tonne (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 mm | 0.617 | 0.188 | 7.5 | 133 |
| 12 mm | 0.888 | 0.271 | 10.8 | 92 |
| 16 mm | 1.578 | 0.481 | 19.2 | 52 |
| 20 mm | 2.466 | 0.752 | 30.1 | 33 |
| 25 mm | 3.853 | 1.174 | 47.0 | 21 |
| 32 mm | 6.313 | 1.924 | 77.0 | 13 |
| 40 mm | 9.864 | 3.007 | 120.3 | 8 |
The formula: where d² ÷ 162.2 comes from
A bar is a long cylinder, so its weight per metre is its cross-sectional area multiplied by the density of steel. With the diameter d in millimetres, the area is π × d² ÷ 4 mm², and steel weighs 7,850 kg per cubic metre. Working the units through gives weight (kg/m) = d² × 0.006165, which is the same as d² ÷ 162.2.
- 12 mm bar: 12 × 12 = 144; 144 ÷ 162.2 = 0.888 kg per metre.
- 20 mm bar: 20 × 20 = 400; 400 ÷ 162.2 = 2.466 kg per metre; × 12.19 m = 30.1 kg per 40 ft bar.
- For kg per foot, multiply kg per metre by 0.3048.
How to turn a bar bending schedule into tonnes
- From the bar bending schedule (BBS), add up the total cut length of each bar size in metres.
- Multiply each size's total length by its kg per metre from the chart.
- Add the sizes together and divide by 1,000 to get tonnes.
- Add the wastage or lap allowance your engineer specifies before you ask for a quote.
Example: 300 full-length 16 mm bars × 19.2 kg = 5,760 kg, or about 5.76 tonnes. If the supplier cuts and bends to your BBS, send the schedule itself and the tonnage is worked out for you.
Buying rebar by weight
In Pakistan rebar is normally priced by weight (per kg or per tonne), not per piece. When material arrives, check the bundle tags against the heat numbers on the mill test certificate and compare the weighbridge slip with the theoretical weight from this chart; a large gap is worth questioning.
Frequently asked questions
How many 12 mm bars are in one tonne?
About 92 bars of standard 40 ft length. A 12 mm bar weighs 0.888 kg per metre, so a 12.19 m bar weighs about 10.8 kg and 1,000 kg ÷ 10.8 kg ≈ 92 bars.
What is the weight of a 16 mm sariya per foot?
About 0.481 kg per foot (1.578 kg per metre × 0.3048), or roughly 19.2 kg for a 40 ft bar.
Why is the delivered weight slightly different from the chart?
The chart gives nominal weights. Mills roll within a permitted tolerance on unit weight, so the actual weight of a lot is shown on its mill test certificate and the weighbridge slip.
